CARLOS GALLOSTRA

ABOUT THE ARTIST

I am a representational artist whose practice has been shaped by the good fortune of working under numerous celebrated mentors in the U.S. and abroad throughout the years. I hold a B.F.A. from the prestigious New World School of the Arts, a conservatory in the heart of Downtown Miami, where I have instructed over the past ten years, as well as an M.F.A. and an M.S. from the renowned Pratt Institute of New York. In addition, I furthered my studies at various ateliers, academies, and museums throughout the U.S. and abroad.

There is a profound presence expressed by each of us that is deeply rooted in the manner we have lived, act, and hope to be. Sometimes, this presence that we express is quite subtle – it manifests quietly and yet, in doing so, seems to cause the most notable impact. Perhaps, through a turn of the gaze or the shifting of the self, it is in those moments that we truly communicate our vulnerability, longing, and in short, our humanity to one another. In other instances, our presence is simply represented by our belongings left about or gifted away – a sort of footprint marking our fleetingness. In my work, I attempt to suggest the presence of people and things that matter to me. The work serves as a tangible record of what once existed. Through the process, the work is inadvertently imbued with my own humanity and it is at the culmination, I suppose, that one may consider both the subject and I are linked.

INSTRUCTION

As artists, I believe that as much as we are all wired to learn, we are also very much inclined to teach - to impart our experiences, approaches, and ideas with regards to our passion in the arts. I have been fortunate to instruct over the past ten years in a broad range of classes and one-to-one workshops. From the novice to the seasoned, each student has the ability to engage and bring to discourse their perspective on art and in doing so, excel by leaps and bounds. It is a privilige to be entrusted as a mentor and to be reminded that we are all after the same thing - a sense of self.
